Tips for an engaging online training experience

Zoom, Skype, Teams, Google Meet and many others – whatever platform you choose - online training is the ‘new normal’

One of the biggest challenges faced by facilitators/trainers is keeping students of online courses interested and engaged. Not much different (you would think) from a classroom environment except… now the students are in their own space and are not an immediate captive audience so can easily be sidetracked by outside influences.

Your role as a dynamic facilitator is more vital now than ever before.

Discipline is needed from both sides – the students must want to learn but the trainer also needs to be innovative with regards to keeping the students interested in the subject – the more engaging the facilitator the better students learn.

Fun – we all need this especially during these tough times and this can be done by using more visual aids, more question and answer sessions and using the technology available to make the training sessions fun – it might be an odd concept when you are training professionals but everyone learns more when they are having fun, they are more relaxed and therefore able to retain more information. “Having fun is the best way to learn – Einstein”

One of the advantages of online training, for both student and facilitators, is that you can arrive at the training session not having spent hours fighting traffic and/or public transport so you are more relaxed and ready to learn. Also social distancing is one less thing to worry about if you are doing online training at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

There are advantages and disadvantages to online training but we are all learning and adapting together to our “new normal” and this is how we grow!
